Section 3

Pgs 51-75

Literary Luminator

Germany’s churches continued pg 41

Churches continued to attack T4

Woe to humanity,
Woe to the German people
If God’s Holy Commandment
‘Thou shall not kill’
Is not only transgressed
But if the transgression is both tolerated
And carried out
Without
Punishment.”

Of all the passages, this one spoke to me the most. While this applies to the Church talking to the German citizens in regards to T4...how many other times in history have we seen people killing other people believing they were right.

I feel that this passage is an excellent example of one of the messages of the book, as well as a passage I feel people would benefit from understanding.

  2. I am the connector for this weeks section.

Connecting this section of T4 to Marcelo in the Real World because Poor Kurt remind me of Marcelo. The way the author describes Poor Kurt he seems to keep to himself as Marcelo did. He does however, open up to Paula as Marcelo opened up to Jasmine. Both relationships developed and I can only wonder if Marcelo and Jasmine would have ended up as Paula and Poor Kurt did which was married.

This section can also relate because Marcelo also had a disability and most of his life was spent with others with a disability. His family felt it best to send him to school where he would not have to face any discrimination. On the other hand, Paula was accepted by those in her town but then Paula was forced into hiding with others that also had a disability.

    1. On page 50 the author discussed that Dr. Bouhler insisted the deaths be painless but the T4 patients were starved to death or had lethal injections. They families were also denied access to their bodies because they were issued fake death certificates.
How would you feel you were denied the right to right to see a loved one’s body, lied about their death, and/or not knowing if the ashes you received where them?

    2. Why do you think Poor Kurt wanted to leave the shelter? Why did Paula want to go with him?

    3. Paula and Poor Kurt met a Jewish family on their adventure. Why do you think the family did not return with them to the shelter?

    4. Do we extend our hand to help others as Paula and Kurt did? Why or why not?

  4. I am the investigator this week and I found this letter on the web that showed how many families were notified of their loved one being executed.
"The personnel would send letters notifying them of their relative’s sudden death (Burleigh & Wippermann, 1991, p.150). Some letters were made more personal such as the extract shown in Exhibit 5. Letters such as these serve as some of the few written ‘testimonies’ of what happened since unlike concentration camps such as Auschwitz, there were no survivors. Everyone transferred to the killing centers was killed and cremated within hours.Below is an excerpt from a letter sent to the family of a victim, where the attempt to deceive them becomes clear."

‘Today the asylum accounting office received your credit transfer of RM20 intended for flowers for the grave of your little daughter Irmgard…Concerning your little daughter, we can report that Irmgard was still overjoyed with the little coat, and above all with the lovely little dolly, which she had in her arms to the very end’.

I thought this was sincerely cold and cruel. Not sure if they thought this would relieve the families grieving and pain; heartless!
