As I was reading I came across the words: Gestapo, Village of Grafeneck, Black Forest, Brandenberg, Berberg, Hartheim, Sonnenstein, and Hadamar.

I have seen and heard the word Gestapo before but could not recall what it meant or was. The Gestapo was the political police of Nazi Germany. They were responsible for rounding up the groups who Hitler wanted to rid the world of.
I found a lot of interesting information at http://www.history.com/topics/gestapo.

The others words listed are a few of the concentration camps where T4 residents were held until they were murdered or “fixed.” It is not know who many camps resided throughout Nazi Germany.
Maps and other information can be found at: http://www.ushmm.org/.

  2. My job this week is the Literacy Luminary. Page 34 " Father Josef said my father was noble But that he coudn't protect me in my home. In time, The Nazis would look for me and find me there. Father Josef told my parents The he would take me with him and hide me In a safe place Until the end of the war. My family was heartbroken, But they agreed to let me go."

I thought that this section was very vivided in my mind as I thoguht about her saying goodbye to her family.

  3. I am the discussion director...

I would like to bring to light Paula's need to flee in order to save her life.

What would you do if you had to make the decision to stay with the life you have always known, or leave everything behind to save your life?

Do you think you would have been brave enough?

Would you have been able to survive?

What must life have been like for people like Paula during this time having to leave everything behind in order to survive?

  4. I am the connector this week and couldn't help but think of Helen Kellar in regards to Paula and how she began to learn "sign" language. Like Paula, Helen Kellar felt all alone in the world and found hope through a teacher :-). How many children have we come in contact with that felt all alone in the world and found hope through our teaching and understanding? Children with disabilities can be successful if given the opportunity to learn and through those lessons gain life skills as well as a sense of hope. However, it never ceases to amaze me how some people can be so cruel and at times evil to those who deal with disabilities on a daily basis. Life is precious, no matter what state of mind one is in.
